Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister JACK JACOB MWIIMBU and his Namibian counterpart Dr. ALBERT KAWANA have launched 24-hour operations at the Katima Mulilo Boarder Post.

Launching the operations, Mr. MWIIMBU said that operating on a 24-hour basis at the border is essential in meeting Zambia’s aspirations of becoming a prosperous middle-income Nation by 2030.

He said this service aligns with the Country’s 8th National Development Plan (NDP) of increasing domestic and international trade.
“The 24-hour operation will contribute to the creation of a continental market for goods and services, with ease movement of people and capital,” he said.
He added that the 24hrs operations also seeks to facilitate the growth of intra African trade through better harmonisation and coordination of trade liberalisation across the continent.
And speaking at the same event, Namibia’s Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Security and Safety Dr. ALBERT KAWANA urged the business community from both counties to utilise the service for economic emancipation.
Dr. KAWANA has revealed that Namibia is working towards becoming a logistics hub in the region.
He highlighted the allocation of dry ports to other countries at Walvis Bay, as one of the many ways Namibia is using to achieve the target.
Meanwhile, Western Province Minister KAPELWA MBANGWETA highlighted the need to beef up manpower and staff accommodation among other amenities for officers operating at the border post.
The move to 24-hour operations at Katima Mulilo Border post is an actualisation of a resolution from the 24th session of the Zambia-Namibia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS) held from 17th to 21st April, 2023 in Livingstone.
