President Hakainde Hichilema has tasked the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, the Ministry of Justice and the Zambia correctional Services to urgently resolve issues pertaining to the criminal justice system affecting the welfare of Inmates.
The President has re-echoed the abolishment of the death sentence which he says must be applied by the Justice system. He said that taking life is a preserve of God alone regardless of the crime one commits.
The Head of State also expressed concern on the delays to dispose off cases by the judiciary. He has since directed that no one should be arrested or detained without proper investigations by the law enforcement agencies.
The other directive is for the Corrections department to create separate spaces for circumstantial children and their mothers as well as expectant mothers to avoid the mix.
Mr. Hichilema has further tasked the Ministry of Home Affairs to expedite the Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreements in the construction of correctional centers to help decongest the centers.
Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu has also assured inmates support through bursaries and empowerment programmes which is in line with the the provision of humane custody of inmates.
Meanwhile, Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General, Fredrick Chilukutu says the provision beds, mattresses and beddings to inmates is active countrywide.
Mr. Chilukutu also disclosed that the current 10,650 holding capacity of the Service will expand to 12450, once the new center under at Mwembeshi is opened by October, 2023.
Inmates also took the opportunity to raise various concerns among them; a seemingly slow judicial process and the need for an improved diet.
This was when the President visited Lusaka Central Correctional Center to interact with inmates and consolidate the cleaning activities that had been going on on commemoration of the 2 years in government.
